Details: Exemplification essay will have “Corruption in Illinois” as its general topic, and you will use the articles available here http://www.
Your paper must cite, in MLA format, at least 3 of these sources (which you will then reference fully in a Works Cited list at the end of the paper).
Read some (or all!) of the articles, and then decide on a basic claim you’d like to make. Something as simple as “Illinois has a long history of political corruption” would work. You are welcome (and encouraged) to come up with your own as long as it’s similar in that it makes a claim related to the readings in the link provided above.
Then, to comply with the exemplification aspect of the essay, you’ll need to choose examples, or categories of examples (1 per body paragraph), that support – exemplify, illustrate, prove – this claim. These examples need to come from the readings provided in the link above. Choose the best examples that honestly reflect the group or class they represent. Do not pick examples that do not support your thesis. Also, make sure that your examples display all the chief features of whatever you are illustrating.
Here’s how your paper should be organized. You’ll need a total of 5 paragraphs.
I. Introduction (1 paragraph)
Your introduction needs to introduce the topic/idea and END with a one-sentence thesis statement, which will be your claim followed by a short list of your 3 examples (this provides a preview of what’s to come in the paper).
Example thesis statement: Illinois has a long history of political corruption (ßclaim) as can be seen in/by/through example 1, example 2, and example 3.
II. Body (3 paragraphs)
A. Body Paragraph 1 — this needs to explain your first example that proves/exemplifies your claim.
B. Body Paragraph 2 — this needs to explain your second example that proves/exemplifies your claim.
C. Body Paragraph 3 — this needs to explain your third example that proves/exemplifies your claim.
III. Conclusion (1 paragarph)
Wrap up your paper/reiterate its claim and summarize its content
