ROTELLA’S POST

Week 6- Interactive Assignment-The Nature of the Mind
What is your understanding of the nature of the mind?
The video “Nature of the Mind” is a high-brow philosophical discussion among leading scientists, on how the mind works and its relation to nature, especially its relation to the human body. What I found interesting about the video is that the scientists all agree that even in nature, plants, and animals, there is and will always be conflict. I agree that humans and animals both have conflicts. However, it was a little hard for me to wrap my mind around the sublimation that even plants have conflict. Thus, every living thing has conflict (Krishnamurti, 1982). I’m afraid I’ll have to contemplate the whole ‘conflict among plants’ while longer, to understand that statement. The problem I have with most scientists and their discussions of the mind is that they tend not to acknowledge a higher power when speaking on the subject of nature, man, and the mind. But I digress. The video was hard to comprehend what with the hundred-dollar words spoken with accents. Even after watching it 3 different times, I’m not sure I understand all the fundamentals of what they were saying. But I’ll try.

Describe healthy mental functioning.

One thing that I really liked about the video is when Krishnamurti speaks on the concept of fear, and how fear must be overcome to live a mentally full and healthy life. He states: “Fear can paralyze the body and mind”. One must understand the power of fear and eradicate it from our mind to be truly healthy mentally (Krishnamurti, 1982). I agree that ‘fear’ interrupts many healthy functions, especially functions of the mind. As I understand it, healthy mental functioning is a byproduct of a person who is adaptable to life’s circumstances and eliminates all fear from their lives.
What leads to changes in one’s mental state to the point that psychopathology (unhealthy mental functioning) is demonstrated?
As one might guess, fear is a powerful passion. According to Krishnamurti, “freedom from fear” leads to a healthy mental state. I believe Krishnamurti gives too much power to fear and that it takes much more to live in a healthy mental state. Maybe because I am not the kind of personality that would give into my fears. I believe that once fears are faced, it loses its power. I do agree however, that today’s modern science is a wonderful tool in which to study the mind.
What is the relationship between the mind and other aspects of the human (e.g., body, personality, spirit, family, community, society, etc.)?
According to Krishnamurti, the mind is so powerful that it can rule every other aspect of humanity such as the body, our personality and spirit. Therefore, by extension, it can rule over our families, our communities and inevitably our society and much more. I tend to agree. To a degree
Graphic (e.g., image, picture, drawing, table, chart) to depict your understanding of

How do culture impact one’s understanding of the mind and one’s understanding of mental health?
One thing about our minds and its effect on our culture is that our environment does play a significant role in how we view our society. Ask any scientist and he’ll tell you the same. For me the problem is that I don’t necessarily believe that we are all byproducts of our environment. If we are all products of our society then everyone who lives in the suburbs would be successful people. Conversely, everyone who lives in the slums would be unsuccessful people. We know this is not true.
Comment on the use of diagnostic manuals and handbooks including how they may limit our understanding of psychopathology.
Diagnostic manuals and handbooks have their place. They can give us an abbreviated cause for illnesses and psychosis. But to have a full understanding, we must speak to or be educated by the people who work and teach in these fields.
