African American Culture and Identity in the Visual Arts

African American Culture and Identity in the Visual Arts

There are several categories of expression that must be considered when we look at the evolution of African American visual arts culture—folk art such as quilting, basket-making, pottery, painting, and sculpture; urban and street art like murals and graffiti; and painting, sculpture and photography that emerge out of European traditions. These categories are defined by the era and place in which the artists lived and worked and also by the lifestyles and living conditions of the artists. Write short answers, [3-5 sentences] for each of the questions below. Each answer is worth 25 points toward a maximum score of 125 points. A well-written short answer should identify significant themes addressed in the lesson. Paste your responses in the assignment submission box by the date listed above, but also attach a document file for security and formatting purposes.
