The country was uniquely shaped by its past but is quite innovative and at the forefront of modern-day architecture. Throughout the country, you’ll see different styles, from gothic cathedrals to Moorish castles. Each period in time brought with it a unique style of architecture and most with many global influences.
Here is a list of the different architectural time periods, in chronological order (from earliest to latest):
Moorish period (Castles and Mosques)
Romanesque style (1100 – c. 1230)
Gothic (c. 1200 – c. 1450)
Manueline style (c. 1490 – c. 1520)
Renaissance and Mannerism (c. 1520 – c. 1650)
Restoration architecture (1640–1717)
Baroque style (1717–1755)
Pombaline style (1755–1860)
Modern Architecture (today)
Here is what you have to do:
First, select a time period
Research your specific time period to learn more about the style of architecture.
Provide a short description of the type of architecture, how it originated, and what you found interesting (3-5 sentences)
Find at least two images that represent the style you chose and describe the structure (e.g. year/how long it took to build/where it is located). Explain any significant meaning behind the landmarks and what influenced that style.
