Assessment of Early Childhood Growth and Development

Read the following scenario: Jake is a spirited first grade boy at ABC Elementary School. He just celebrated his 6th birthday. He is very outgoing and eager to learn. Currently, Jake is reading The Percy Jackson series (Reading Level 4.2 – Fourth grade second month) and fully comprehending the text. In math class, Jake enjoys learning about patterns, adding numbers, and sorting/categorizing objects. His teacher describes Jake’s math performance as “on grade level.” Jake is well-liked by his classmates and his teammates on his soccer and baseball teams. Jake’s parents describe him as an “easy kid” and report having “no concerns”.

Based on the scenario above, analyze Jake’s current development in connection to the research on typical early childhood (ages 5-8) growth and milestones. Construct an analysis of Jake’s growth, identifying areas that are typical and atypical and providing an overview of research-based strategies/approaches you may use as a classroom teacher to meet Jake’s needs.

Child Development: Case Analysis

Children are bound to make distinct milestones at different ages, a clear indicator of their development in cognitive and social skills within their environments. Failure to achieve these milestones is often viewed by parents and other child development professionals as a deviation from the norm and possible developmental problem in the said child. Jake’s interaction with others and the comments made about his welfare indicate that he is a normal kid and making the appropriate milestones for a child his age. His ability to interact with others easily and appreciation by other members within his peer-group indicate that he is sociable and contributes as they would deem appropriate to the group settings.
