Question

In an online public speaking class, the only audience you’ll have is the one that will view your video after you’ve recorded it. So although you’ll be speaking directly to a camera, an audience will be on the other side watching, albeit at a later date. Still, you must consider your audience for this speech. To whom are you delivering this topic? What do they know about your topic already? Will they understand the terms and other languages you use?

All of these questions and more can be answered by completing an audience analysis. This typically doesn’t take long, and it’s not meant to be an all-encompassing analysis of every audience member. No one can possibly know all of those things about every audience member for a speech like this.

Still, you can make assumptions about your audience. Your analysis can focus on general demographics and traits, values and beliefs, etc. For example, let’s say you want to deliver a speech on the importance of wearing your seat belt when you drive. This is an important topic, and one that has been delivered as a speech many times in this course. However, it’s important to consider who is on the receiving end of this information, and is it important to them. Are you speaking to people drive (who have a drivers license)? Are these new drivers or seasoned road warriors? What are their ages, economic backgrounds, education levels? Do they own cars or do they prefer public transit?

To this end, you will construct an audience analysis for both your informative and persuasive speeches. Answer the following questions to construct your analysis. When you do this, you’ll see how quickly you develop a one-page audience analysis in very little time:

If you were speaking to an audience on your topic, who would be your most desirable audience for this topic? What traits would be most desirable? Please be specific and select a group. I know most speeches are great for a wide range of demographics. I would like you to narrow. So please refrain from simply answering all groups.

Select any 7 of the topics below to answer this question. Please write 1-3 sentences for 7 topics/subtopics including why you have chosen that range or type. Please be very descriptive and clear.

Some of these areas can be for anyone (i.e. How to save money can apply for all ages). If that is the case, I suggest not selecting that topic. Some areas are more specific (i.e. How to check for prostate cancer. This is a specific age of people.)

This is worth half of the Competency #1points of your speech (10 points).
