Question 1

Desertification is the increase in area covered by desert-like conditions due to the encroachment of deserts to formerly productive arable land. Increases in these areas result from a reduction in rainfall amount over the years due to climatic changes, which in turn affect the availability of moisture within the area that would otherwise support life therein. Desertification could result from human activities such as increased deforestation, or natural consequences such as changes in rainfall patterns within a particular region as a result of climatic change. Therefore, desertification is a process in which human activities could play a role in reducing or exacerbating.
