King Lear Essay Guidelines:
All papers for this course should be 3-5 pages long, double-spaced with standard font and margins (use the default font and margins in your MS Word program). The minimum length for the paper to pass is three full pages.
You must submit both papers (for Twelfth Night and King Lear) via TRACS by 5 pm on April 13. To turn your paper in on TRACS, upload your files to your Drop Box. See the document “How to submit your paper via TRACS” on our Resources page if you need to learn how to do this. Grades for both papers will be entered on TRACS by April 30.
Prompt for King Lear Essay.
During the nineteenth century, King Lear was thought to be unfit for the stage. Discuss how this view derived from that era’s realistic expectations for theatrical representation. Describe how Shakespeare’s own theatre was not devoted to realism, and how the play only returned to theatrical prominence when modern practitioners began to once again employ the theatrical conventions of the early modern period. Be sure to mention:
Universal lighting.
The proximity of the audience.
The lack of realistic scenery or stage effects.
This essay will be graded pass/fail. You have only one chance to submit your paper. Neither the Professor nor the IAs will preview your paper before you submit it. You will NOT be able to revise the paper if you fail. If you fail, you lose a full-letter grade for the semester. To pass you must observe the following rules:
You must answer ALL of the issues in the above prompt, incorporating these answers into well-structured paragraphs.
The title King Lear must be italicized (not underlined or put in quotation marks) every time you use it within the body of your essay. DO NOT, HOWEVER, ITALICIZE THE NAME OF THE CHARACTER KING LEAR. IF YOU DO, YOUR PAPER WILL FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!
Quotation Guidelines:
The Professor’s lecture notes for Lear are posted on TRACS to help you write this essay. If you choose to quote from any of the published works cited in these lecture notes, you must do so in proper MLA format and list the quoted work on a Works Cited page. Examples:
George C.D. Odell writes that “Tate’s mangling was castigated for a century and a half” (1: 53).
Or
Tate’s adaptation of Lear was “castigated for a century and a half” (Odell 1: 53).
You would then add a “Works Cited” Page (which does not count toward the page-count of your paper) with the following entry:
Odell, George C.D. Shakespeare from Betterton to Irving. 2 vols. New York: Benjamin Bloom, 1920 (reprinted in 1963).
You must quote directly from the play in your essay. This means from the written text of King Lear, Broadview Anthology of British Literature Edition, ISBN 978-1-551-119670. Follow the quotation guidelines for Twelfth Night as described above. If you only quote from King Lear, no Works Cited page is needed.
