Week 2.2: Yemen Participation Exercise
Before reading the assigned Singer article on famine, consider what, if anything, your/our responsibility is toward the famine in Yemen by addressing one (or more if you wish) of the questions below or by responding to another classmate’s answer. What you contribute is not necessarily a position you are committed to. You might, for instance, regard this as an opportunity to kick around some different thoughts on this. You only need to answer one. (Note: There is no debriefing of this exercise.) 1. There are people starving right here in the U.S.—perhaps in your home area. Are we more responsible for somebody that we come across on the streets of our hometown than for somebody in Yemen? If so, why? If not, why not? or 2. Who, if anyone, should help famine victims? The government? Individuals? or 3. If we as individuals should help famine victims, exactly how far do we have to go to help?
