Now that we have begun considering the importance of sound on screens, I want you to look at sound in one of your favorite films, television programs, or video games. The task of this assignment is for you to choose a film, television program episode, video game, etc. and give consideration to the sound on the screen and present it in a sonic analysis.
You must focus your analysis on a specific scene or a specific sound element (i.e. the mixing/use of dialog, use of scored or incidental music, or the use/creation of specific sound effects) or both a scene and a sound element within that scene. you may address how the sound interacts w/ visual (i.e. consider why a certain sound design complemented lighting for a scene, etc.). Try listening to the text with on blindfold on over, and over, and over again! Also, try watching the visuals without the sound and then go back to listening. Think about where the image would be without the sound!
Choose a scene in a film/tv episode/video game level that has a strong sound and give careful thought to it!
Look at the role of music in a film/tv episode/video game.
Look at the mixing and construction of dialog in a film/tv episode/video game.
Look at specific sound effects in a film/tv episode/video game (i.e. look at the dinosaur sounds in Jurassic Park and how they were made or how weapon sounds were made in Star Wars)
try and find behind-the-scenes information and research the design and production of these sound elements for the specific text you’re looking at ! Who was the sound designer?
Who was the composer? What have they done? Are they auteurs, etc?
General questions you may ask during analysis:
- How does the sound create emotion or feeling?
- How does the sound make you as the audience feel?
- How does the sound create a sense of reality? Or, hyperreality? Or, abstraction?
- How does the sound create a sense of texture?
- How does sound create a sense of space? How does it create depth?
- How does sound create sonic continuity? How is it discontinuous?
- Maybe not only in respect to narrative, but overall structural continuity or both!
- How does sound create a sense of weight, size, and height?
- How does sound create a character? ! How does sound enhance the story?
