“Women in Leadership: Using Emotional Intelligence to Drive Results” Course Project

Part One: Examining Emotional Intelligence

In this module, you examined the meaning of emotional intelligence and its four key dimensions. You also assessed your own proficiency in emotional intelligence and began keeping a journal of emotions. Now you will further examine emotional intelligence by analyzing an excellent leader of your choosing.

Complete the following grid.Use all the space you need.

Describe someone you consider to be an outstanding leader, either female or male, paying particular attention to this person’s actions and behaviors.

Describe how this person’s leadership qualities depend on (or related to) emotional intelligence.

Map this leader’s qualities to the matrix in this lesson. In which part(s) of the matrix does this person excel? Support your ideas with specific examples of behavior. Refer to the four-quadrant matrix in the course as you answer this question.

How do you think this person’s team benefits from the leader’s emotional intelligence?

Part Two: Developing the Self-related Competencies

In this part of the course, you conducted an internet search for the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence and you accessed its reports related to emotional intelligence. You found at least one piece of evidence which you can use to explain the value (either to an individual leader’s effectiveness or to an organization’s bottom line) of developing emotional intelligence competencies.

Now you will make that business case. What evidence have you found in support of developing emotional intelligence competencies? Cite both the piece of evidence you found and the report itself (title, year). Additionally, include a link to the articles you have used so that your instructor can see your sources.

Make a business case for emotional intelligence. Use all the space you need.

How do you think developing your emotional intelligence, and in particular your self-related competencies, will serve you as a leader?

How will it help you in support of your organizational goals?

Part Three: Developing the Social-related Competencies

Now that you have had a chance to examine social-related competencies, complete analysis of effective leadership behaviors that have drawn on these key dimensions of emotional intelligence. You will choose a leader who has demonstrated great skill in these areas and deconstruct the person’s performance so that you can draw lessons from their example of excellence.

Complete the following grid. Use all the space you need.

Identify someone you consider to be an outstanding leader, either female or male. (This can be a person you’ve known personally or a leader from history, current events, or the public sphere.)

What, specifically, did the person do that demonstrated strong social awareness?

What did the person do that demonstrated strong relationship management skills?

How did this leader’s emotional intelligence help to further his or her goals? Be as specific as you can in drawing connections between emotional intelligence and the results that the leader achieved.
