Emergency Department and Urgent Care Services

INTRODUCTION
Carefully read the Ethics Incident #11 Demarketing to Avoid Bankruptcy located on page 395 in Darr, Farnsworth, & Myrtle’s Case book. This case study presents an administrative ethical issue of whether demarketing the Emergency Department is ethical defensible given Community Hospital’s poor financial prognosis. Community Hospital serves a largely inner-city population, many of whom are uninsured and whose care was paid by a chronically underfunded Medicaid program that reimbursed poorly, there seemed little hope that the financial situation would improve.

UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES

ULO #3: Justify that the provision of care in the emergency department (ED) is not just a legal requirement for the entities that receive federal reimbursement, but an ethical obligation. (CLO 7)
ULO #4: Formulate a recommendation on how to assist a healthcare organization to remain financial viable. (CLO 3, 4, and 7)
