Now that you’ve been introduced to some important themes and developments of the 1800s we are going to briefly examine the ancestral roots of Chicanos as interpreted in the reading.
Chicano is an American Identity
During the Chicano Movement, many Chicanos searched out and identified with their indigenous ancestry and realized that we are brown and beautiful and that being of Mexican and Central American descent means were are descended from the first people to North America.
We have a complex history and historical connection to the land as the descendants of its indigenous people. The quote below by Luis Valdez illustrates some of these points:
“We left no teeming shore in Europe, hungry and eager to reach the New World…No Statue of Liberty ever greeted our arrival to this country…We did not, in fact, come to the United States at all. The United States came to us.”
