1. Leadership is a complex process that requires leaders to critically appraise the circumstances in which they find themselves to best determine how to lead and influence those around them. There are multiple tactics leaders can employ in any given circumstance to influence a situation or their followers. Compare two leaders you have dealt with in the past. Discuss the different tactics these leaders employed to influence situations or people. Provide examples of when these tactics were successful and when they were not successful. As a leader, describe how you can critically appraise situations to make sure you select appropriate tactics for influencing a given situation.

2. The concept of leadership as a “vocation” greatly distinguishes leadership from a job, career, or what one simply does for a living. A vocation can be thought of as one’s calling. Vocation is often associated with the clergy or missionaries who feel called by a higher power to fulfill a specific purpose. Vocation is also a concept associated with careers like teachers, emergency responders, doctors, or other health care professionals who feel strongly compelled to dedicate their own lives to improving the lives of those whom they serve. Consider your own view of leadership. Discuss how this understanding of leadership as a vocation informs your understanding of the personal and moral commitments required of leaders. If leadership is not a job, but a calling, discuss the responsibilities leaders have towards their position, their organization, and their followers.

Leaders have the responsibility towards their position to be the best they can be not only to themselves but their employees and their organization. A first-line leader is the shield between upper-level management and the first-line employees. A first-line leader’s job is to invest in his employees so they can be the best employee they can be for the organization and for themselves so they can grow within the organization. A leader must inspire their employees do their job complete their job so, management is happy with the employees, and the leaders job performance.

A leader’s job toward the organization is first to understand they work for the organization. A leader must be able to understand the organizations’ policies and core values and translate them to their employees in a way the employees so that the policies to benefit the employees. A leader must be able to take bad news from upper-level management, and put a twist on the information, making it seem like a positive for the employees. One of the biggest tasks any leader can have is being their employees motivated and morale up even in bad times.

A leader needs to know their weaknesses and always be trying to minimize them, while showing their strengths. A leader must be looking to the for the next leader who can take their position when they leave. Not are leaders are born, and some people can be taught to be leaders. Some people no matter how much training they receive either don’t want to be a leader, or don’t have the ability to be a leader. It is up to the current leader to know who can be future leaders in the organization they currently work for.
