If you find words or phrases that are puzzling or unfamiliar, if you find words or phrases that are essential to the plot, and/or if you find words or phrases that are important images, symbols, metaphors, etc., jot them down. Then, think about how the author used the word/phrases that you identified. Think about how this particular author is using words/language to enhance the tone and theme(s) of the novel.
