M2 Assignment 2

M2 Assignment 2

Assignment 2: Community Health Assessment

In this course you will be performing a variety of activities and then, in each module, writing an assignment to connect theory to practice. All activities must be conducted in a pre-determined census tract with your professor.

Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county. Census tracts usually have between 1,200 and 8,000 persons and, when first delineated, are designed to be homogeneous with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living conditions (United States Census Bureau, 2010).

You will record 3 hours of clinical experience for this assignment. Activities throughout the term will count towards your 15 hours of clinical experience for the course. You must accurately record your hours and activity in your clinical log found in the syllabus.

You must write at least 3 pages per activity in APA format and include a title and reference page (not part of the three pages) as well as cite at least one research-based nursing journal related to the topic.

Tasks:

Visit a restaurant and grocery store in your assigned census tract. Make sure you bring a copy of this assignment, a notebook, and pen to document your findings. It is critical that you are specific in what you observe. Then, go into literature and find scholarly articles that support your findings.

In a 3–4-page essay, respond to the following:

  • Describe the people within these establishments, the nature of the products being sold, the cultural flavor themes you observe, and note three differences from the larger community.
  • Discuss the implications of your findings for the health of the people.
  • How does going to a restaurant/grocery store enhance your understanding of this community?
  • Support your findings with examples and scholarly references.
  • Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Submission Details:

  • By the due date assigned, post your assignment to the Submissions Area. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc.

Community Health Assessment

Different issues within any one given society influence its health status. Consequently, while some communities could be prone to communicable diseases, there are other areas where such diseases may only be reported in highly isolated cases. Factors such as culture, government intervention, and hygiene levels are some of the critical factors that could contribute to the observed cases (AbuAlRub & Foudeh, 2017). Therefore, it is always important for health practitioners to understand the environment in which they operate appropriately as it helps anticipate, and even develop measures to combat some of the most prominent health issues likely to occur within the environment in question.
