Week 1: Determinants of Health (graded)
PURPOSE
This week’s graded topics relate to the following Course Outcome (CO).

CO 1: Apply principles of nursing theory to the public health system by analyzing determinants of health and the public health intervention wheel. (PO 1)
DISCUSSION
What are some factors that make some people healthy and others ill? Healthy People 2020identifies five determinants of health that influence the health of individuals and populations.Healthy People 2020 describes them as “a range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health status” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2018, About Determinants of Health, para. 1). Determinants fall into five categories, including (a) policy making, (b) social factors, (c) health services, (d) individual behavior, and (e) biology and genetics.

Go to the Determinants of Health link at https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/about/foundation-health-measures/Determinants-of-Health (Links to an external site.), and click on each determinant to read about it.
Choose one of the five determinants other than individual behavior (as we are all aware of how individual behavior impacts health). In your post, describe this determinant and its importance.
Discuss how a community health nurse (CHN) could use one of the 17 intervention categories from the Public Health Intervention Wheel to address this determinant (Nies & McEwen, 2019).

According to Healthy People 2020, Social Factors which effect societal health can also be referred to as social and physical determinants of health. “Social determinants of health reflect the social factors and physical conditions of the environment in which people are born, live, learn, play, work, and age” (Healthy People 2020). These factors can influence people’s health, performance, and quality-of-life. Exposure to these social and physical determinates such as; resource availability, social acceptance, exposure to high crime and violence, quality education, natural or built environment, transportation, exposure to toxic and physical hazards and overall safety can have a huge impact on health. Poor health outcomes are often made worse by the interaction between individuals and their social and physical environment” (Healthy People 2020).

As a Community health nurse we have the essential ability and charge to actively affect the health of our society. By assessing the needs of our society and individuals and supplying needed guidance and connections to available resources we can improve the overall health and quality of life. Researching local, personal, environmental, and societal determinates of health and providing evidence-based interventions is essential to the community health nurses role in promoting a healthier way of life. As nurses we embody the largest portion of health care laborers; therefore we are instrumental to implementing a health care delivery system which will meet the needs of the public and help to improve their overall health. Community health nursing is indebted with the major goal of preserving the health of the community and surrounding society. The majority of its focus is health promotion and maintenance of individuals, families, and organizations within the surrounding community. (Nies & McEwen, 2019)

Policy development and enforcement is a key tool incorporated into the Public Health Intervention Wheel which aids the community health nurse advocating for improving the health of the population. Policy development and enforcement comes into play when the community health nurse identifies issues and ensures they are included in state, local and government decision makers’ agendas. Each agenda requires leaders take action on a plan of resolution; needed resources are determined and implemented, resulting in laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and policies being put into place. By ensuring policy enforcement the nurse’s actions influence compliance by others with laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and policies set forth through these actions. (Nies & McEwen, 2019)

An example of community health research and assessment coinciding with the implementation of new policies, laws, rules and regulations was the incidence of lead poisoning in children from paint used in previous years. Through research and studies children exposed to lead-based paint were determined to be the subjects of suffering lifelong consequences. The lead poisoning, through exposure, caused children to be wrought with learning disabilities, loss of IQ, attention deficit, and behavior problems. It was determined the solution to preventing this medically untreatable disease was to control and prevent exposure to children in their environments. Over the past years the national approach to lead poisoning has evolved in stages. In the beginning treating children with extreme symptoms was primary. Next focusing on the children with elevated blood lead levels was implemented. Finally the focus of acknowledging the consequences of the presence of lead-based paint and incorporating regulation, policies, laws and ordinances to ensure properties would be made lead free in order to end the chances of lead poisoning in children.
