Topic: PSY 635 Week 3 Discussion Reply to Eden’s Post Philosophical Differences Between Qualitative and Quantitative Paradigms and Approaches

Details: Week 3 Discussion Philosophical Differences Between Qualitative and Quantitative Paradigms and Approaches
Respond to at least one peer who recommended a different qualitative design or paradigm than you did. Describe how your chosen paradigm might or might not be compatible with your colleague’s proposed research design. Evaluate your colleague’s identified ethical issues and suggest any addition concerns his or her design and/or paradigm might generate. Consider the explanation of differences between the quantitative and qualitative research approaches your colleague has provided. Suggest any differences between the two approaches which were not included in your colleague’s initial post. How might these differences affect the interpretation of the findings of the research? (SEE EDEN’S POST BELOW).

The instructors would like to answer two additional research questions: (a) How do their students actually feel about the intervention? and (b) How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)? compare the characteristics of appropriate research designs and recommend a qualitative research design that would facilitate answering the instructors’ additional questions. Explain the philosophical paradigm underlying the recommended approach. Evaluate the required articles for this week and describe the assumptions the instructors might have to set aside as they enter into a qualitative research study. Be sure to identify any ethical issues that may apply to the research. Review the characteristics of the quantitative approach you described in the Week Two Discussion. Explain the ways in which the quantitative approach and paradigm differs from the qualitative approach and paradigm you have recommended here.
There are “four commonly used qualitative methods: ground theory, interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), discourse analysis, and narrative analysis, which and be used in combination” (Frost, 2011). The grounded theory is about what, how, and why something is happening. Discourse analysis is about language, what and why it was said. IPA is making sense of the world by meanings of events and experiences of the people. Narrative analysis is making sense of stories through perspective by individuals and their external and internal world.
In truth, I would make this a mixed qualitative research design to answer the instructor’s research questions, which are Discourse analysis and Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to learn what and why things are said and the meaning of events and experiences of the students. Since I must choose one, I will choose Discourse analysis. Philosophical paradigm underpinning “seeks to avoid the limitations imposed by a single method, such as limitations by seeking out new insights” (Frost, 2011).
For this research, I would suggest using Bricolage because it is used for social, cultural, historical, and language. It examines the context by researching many views to gain a complex insight.
Pragmatism is different because it’s usually simple and doesn’t always take into account what it takes to do the approach. The research question is the main focus.
The assumptions would be competitive in using both qualitative research methods, and they might not find the best method approach to the problem. Some methods of research are limited to one view, by using multiple methods can give you a better understanding of the data and problem creating a more valid research data/view.
The ethical issue is privacy, how will their information be used, who would see it, and why. This needs to be addressed by moving forward. Can they not participate if they don’t want to?
My qualitative approach was more geared towards number data not the views of the students. I would still have to use the mixed qualitative method approach that I have learned about this week. I would use ground theory and Discourse analysis for my approach to my week two discussion. That way I can still use the number of data of the discussion and the student’s view that the additional two questions the instructors want to add.
I hope everyone had a great holiday.
