1. Think about an older person whom you have known over a long period of time. What personality do characteristics appear to have been stable over time? What characteristics have changed? Do Erikson’s stages match your experiences and what you have observed in this person? If not, what changes might you make to Erikson’s theory (e.g., ages of the stages, or missing stages)?
2Take some time to visit various depression sites on the web (e.g., http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/depression/index.shtml) and learn more about different types of depression (e.g., post-partum, seasonal affective, and bipolar disorder). How might age be a factor in some of these types? How might one determine the best path for the treatment of depression in older populations?
3. How do the person-environment theories apply to your own living situation? For the average college student? Can you draw any parallels between your college life moves (to college and around campus) and the information on adjustment to moves and relocation for the elderly that is discussed in the text?
