• How are conference presentations professionally relevant?
Conference presentations are professionally relevant because they offer valid, credible, and applicable research findings for specific realms. Professionals can use presentations as a platform to collaborate, investigate, and explore current research, trends, and phenomena while simultaneously venturing into newly pioneered or undiscovered areas.
What elements of the proposal process were most difficult for you, and why?
I found it difficult trying to formulate an abstract with the objective, purpose, assessment, and conclusion based on my resources. I tried to include the necessary information without getting too detailed or rambling. But, it was quite a challenge.
• What positive outcomes do you anticipate will come from this process, which may be applied to potential work settings and/or doctoral programs?
I am eager to read my peers’ abstracts and see their presentations in week five. I think it will offer more insight into the research process and will be a valuable strategy for future research in my PsyD program. This type of platform will also be highly beneficial in my line of work to stay abreast on efficacious treatment modalities.

Abstract

Neuroimaging technology is an invaluable, underutilized instrument in mental health evaluation and remediation. Biomarkers are indispensable mechanisms that assist in treatment targets, responses, and outcomes. This presentation will synthesize current neuroimaging literature as it relates to behavioral and pharmacological treatment for substance use disorder [SUD]. Furthermore, this review will explicate the relationship between biomarkers and addiction treatment by interpolating relevant findings. Positron emission tomography [PET], magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI], and proton magnetic resonance imaging [1H MRS] are investigated in connection to addiction biomarkers; in addition to the efficacy of specific behavioral and pharmacological therapeutic interventions. A meticulous focus on craving reduction and cognitive enhancement medications includes baclofen, hydrochloride, naltrexone, methadone, varenicline, bupropion, modafinil, and N-acetylcysteine. Behavioral and neural modalities emphasize cognitive-behavioral therapy [CBT], cue-exposed treatment [CET], motivational interventions, cognitive bias modification training, virtual reality, transcranial magnetic stimulation [TMS], transcranial direct current stimulation [tDCS], and neurofeedback. An exploration of neural resting-state connectivity, cognitive control, impulsivity, and cue reactivity will identify biomarkers of SUD treatment. Current reviews in this capacity indicate clinical outcomes of SUD treatment limited to responses, adherence, and relapse. Findings from this review denote insight into functional connectivity variations within particular brain regions, cues and rewards, and neural processes involved in the treatment of SUD. Implications highlight potential biomarkers associated with SUD that can serve as mediators and moderators of interventions. Future neuroimaging research in the realm of SUD treatment should focus on innovative approaches such as TMS, tDCS, and neurofeedback to assess indices and functional dimensions related to substance use treatment. Thereby, further magnifying clinical knowledge and therapeutic exertions as implemented for SUD treatment.
