How effective is the treatment for dysthymia in children?
For this week’s Assignment, we are in the process of effective treatment for dysthymia in the younger population. According to the DSM, there are several mental and psychological disorders listed that can be generally associated with this disorder. The disorder that will be detailed and discussed is a disorder known as Persistent Depressive Disorder. This disorder is a form of depression that is also known as dysthymia according to the DSM and other psychological studies. This form of depression is known to have prolonged treatment in a long-term setting. The person that has been diagnosed with this form of depression often times loses most of their personal interest and exemplifies little to no feelings at all. They express more feelings of sadness and hopelessness than others. The individual always expresses feeling tired and irritable most of the time. This research will be conducted on 20 students over a 5-year time span. The study suggests that 11 percent of children in the range of age 11 to age 18 are affected by this disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
The Background
The background of this disorder can have many effects; most of them have long-lasting. We look at how the body use; or even has no production of important chemicals needed to create a balance in their body. (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Treatment of this disorder can include but is not limited to the use of antidepressants, family therapy, and psychotherapy for many people who suffer from this disorder. There are many causes that can cause onset symptoms to flare up. Things such as death, trauma, and even medical issues can be a result. Research suggests that over half of the individuals that have been tested in a large group setting have had a successful outcome, whereas others have had several laps in their treatment. (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). This is mainly due to a break or laps in treatments both psychologically and through medication. The example that can be used. 20 students with dysthymia are being observed in a group setting Group A is has follow-up information from continuous treatment over a 5-year period. Group B is the other half that has not contained treatment over the same 5-year period. The individuals who stayed in the treatment had better outcomes versus those who ended their treatment due to unknown reasons. The group’s behaviors will be observed to see how they coexist with other in their surrounding around their age groups. (Frost, 2011).
Test Results
After using the data collected from testing, observations, and other forms of assessments the findings can conclude that of the 20 studied in the research half of them had positive outcomes due to their treatments was continued and understood that this was a long-term option that helps the individuals have more success in life. Also, the use of therapy helps create a trusting environment that helps to produce more positive relationships later in life. The research can be used by both qualitative and quantitative design with the model method called Narrative Method. (Frost, 2011). This is because of the time it was collected and the length of the process in which it took through assessment, testing, and other observational steps to predict the best outcome. that helps to derive the final outcome of the said research being created. There will be a series of questions ask and ways to help collaborate the results from the group observations. (Frost, 2011).
Ethical Standards
Another consideration to view is the APA standards that were used in order to perform the research. Each person has to sign off an informed consent in order to be used in the testing, and planning of this research to ensure each party understood their role in this investigative process. In this statement, there also can include a clause that allows them not to withdraw from the case study for any purpose other than that of an emergency. (Frost, 2011).
