Chair of the Department of Religion at Boston University, Prothero in this introduction makes a case for the importance of understanding the basic teachings of all world religions, suggesting that it’s a vital task for understanding the world itself. “Neither the American Revolution nor the Civil War is comprehensible in a religious vacuum,” Prothero writes. “The same goes for social reform movements such as abolitionism, temperance, women’s rights, civil rights, and environmentalism.” (2007, 4). Write a short (two to four page) response paper, offering your own agreement or disagreement with the thoughts expressed in the introduction. No outside sources are required, but this initial paper provides an opportunity for the instructor to observe your writing skills and offer feedback. See the assignment schedule for the due date.
