Week 5 – Walker 2021
Using different methods to research bipolar disorder is a must. The reason is, bipolar affects different people, populations, ages family and generations in different ways. Knowing how people view individuals with bipolar, and how the individual sees themselves are also some of the reasons why using different methods is important. There is also the need to see what treatment is best in treating the disorder, and the psychological effects that come with it. In using qualitative methods in my research, the focus would be on the post-positive approach. The post-positive approach is a scientific method of knowledge building. Knowing scientific reasoning is important in any research. It is dependent on the person’s experience, and behaviors. The quantitative method used would be the focus of the methodologies. The focus would be more on the actual experiences. The use of surveys and other methods on a small scale is in data gathering would be used in getting the now experience of individuals. My research question would be answered with a mix of both qualitative and quantitative methods to get a true understanding.
The most dominant in my research would be the qualitative method because it focuses on the mechanism of the research. Meaning how an individual feels, societal stereotypes, medication usage. Qualitative research in this case can help me to test the validity of my research on a broader scale by using quessstionals internet and other resources in gathering information..
A mixed-method approach is the best way to study my topic because it answers the questions that people what to know about the disease. It helps in educating people with bipolar disorder and people who might have family or friends dealing with the illness. Mixed methods use multi-methods that combines two or more quantitative methods such as surveys and experiment in a single research study(Hesse-Bieber, 2010). Other reasons are regulation and complementary research. Complimentary helps the researcher to gain a better understanding of a research problem.
Not using a mixed-method in my research would limit my understanding limit my external validity of the topic, single outcome, and the concern of case selection. Representative or random samples may not be the most appropriate. Given that they may not provide the richest insight or intent that a random and unknown deviant case may present( Hesse-Biber, 2010).
If I decided not to use use a mixed-method approach I would say that Qualitative study would be my focus because of the data collection method. In qalitative method coding and analysis occurs simultaneously and not sequentially. So the validity would be more accurate because its random.
In choosing the qualitative research method I would support my position in knowing that qualitative research will help to give a voice to individuals who are struggling with the disease. The qualitative research will help in exploring the right questions to ask individuals and seek to educate others by using a wide range of methods in gathering information. According to Graor, 2013, the researcher needs to be flexible ethically, they have to use interpersonal reflexivity to help promote ethical methodological rigor. In Qualitative research, whoever is conducting the research should make sure that there is clear communication to potential participants. The client should be told that confidentiality will be enforced. Some of the concerns in my research would be the lower functioning individuals who have the disease. If the individual is unable to participate in the study correctly, the result may be vague and fragmented. An enhanced informed consent should be used with the method for the different participants. The informed consent should be tailored for different populations. Another Ethical consideration is, to make sure that the rights, respect, and dignity of those participating in the study are upheld.
