Burdens in The Things They Carried

Any reader would quote a book in which he or she felt exposed to the author’s environment as his or her ideal kind of literature. An effective writer should always be in a position to influence the audience so much that they feel like part of the experiences the author intends to highlight in the material. Consequently, most authors have always hoped to achieve as much impact as they hope to do by using pathos within the text, which then helps create a connection between the author and the audience. Books written with such an appeal are often too hard to leave without getting to the final resolution as presented by the author. In Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, the theme of burdens and its use in the introductory chapter of the book laid an effective foundation which made it possible for the audience to experience the author’s message far more than could have been the case were the theme omitted or included elsewhere within the book.
