Instructions

You are a freelance reporter who has been hired by the Military Times to write a comprehensive essay about the experiences of soldiers from the Revolutionary War through World War I that will be published on November 11 (Veterans Day).

Discussion of World War I should be primary as Veterans Day is related to this war. You were hired for this assignment because the Military Times discovered that you are the descendant of professional soldiers, all of whom wrote about their experiences (you are descended from the soldiers you have written about in earlier assignments, and your great-grandfather fought in and wrote about World War I).

The Military Times wants an academic article that addresses the unique experiences of colonial and U.S. soldiers (including your ancestors) from the Revolution through World War I, as well as an article that identifies the changes and innovations that occurred in the military during this time. Address what the military’s role was when the nation was not officially at war.

Your project is to be treated as an article that will appear in the Military Times. You should address the following concepts listed below.

Reflect on the experience of an American soldier during World War I and why the war happened (including your ancestor).
Compare and contrast the experiences of colonial and U.S. soldiers (including your ancestors) from the War of Independence in the 18th century through the early 20th century. In addition to the Revolutionary War and World War I, ensure you include one or more of the other conflicts in your article:
Civil War,
Native American Wars, or
Spanish-American War.
Identify the major innovations and technology that affected the military from the Revolutionary War through World War I.
Discuss the role of the military when the nation was not at war.
Your project must be at least three pages in length (double-spaced), and will include a title and reference page (title and reference pages do not count toward the page requirement). You must include an introduction. You should use three to five academic sources to support your discussion and information (your textbook may be one of these sources). Do not use websites or other prohibited sources (encyclopedias, etc.). Use professional journal articles, books, or higher education (college and university) and government sources. The CSU Online Library can assist you in finding proper sources.
