Week 3 discussion forum
The subject for the Week 3 discussion forum is the sculptural style of the Hellenistic period. There are many differences between the style and subject matter of Classical sculptures and those produced after 323 B.C.E. (the beginning of the Hellenistic). Select one sculpture from the Hellenistic period that you are interested in and discuss this sculpture in comparison to the sculpture from the Classical.
You may wish to focus on one or more of the following questions:
1) Social and political developments in Greece at the end of the Classical period greatly influenced the subject matter of Hellenistic sculpture. How is the subject matter of the sculpture or sculptural program you have selected different from examples we have looked at from the Classical i.e. the Aphrodite of Knidos.
2) Hellenistic sculpture is much more dramatic and emotional compared to examples from the Classical period. How is the style of the sculpture you have selected different from examples of the Classical style? How has the sculptor employed various techniques such as high relief and placement of the sculpture within a sculptural program to underscore these ideas?
3) How does Hellenistic sculpture engage the viewer?
