In this assignment, you will read three primary sources that address progressive causes such as the abolition of slavery, women’s rights, and temperance. You will also write a short essay in which you identify the primary audience for each source, and then compare and contrast how the authors of each source attempted to convince their audience to support their desired reforms.
Throughout the nineteenth century, social and religious reformers hoped they could turn the tide of public opinion in favor of their causes. The following sources address the abolition of slavery, women’s rights, and temperance. The men and women who were active in each reform movement relied upon the transmission of ideas about their causes to public audiences who would then—they hoped—take action towards growing the movements and implementing the various reforms they sought.
After studying the following primary sources, craft a short essay where you identify the primary audience for each source, and then compare and contrast how the authors of each source attempted to convince their audience to support their desired reforms. Focus on persuasive language and imagery, and highlight evidence from the documents in your response.
Your response should be 2-3 paragraphs in length, and should meet the following criteria:
It addresses all portions of the topic or prompt.
It has a fully developed thesis.
Ideas are stated clearly and easy to understand.
Major supporting ideas are thoughtful, readily identifiable, and well-developed in unified paragraphs with concrete, substantial and relevant information.
It demonstrates command of the language, with precise word choices, and few—if any—errors in usage or mechanics.
