Social Construction Paper. Have to know what social construction is

Fresh off the Boat Season 2, Episode 6

Give an example from the episode that depicts differing second-order realities and articulate the discrepancies between them, related to the first-order reality. Then use those differing meanings, examples from the show, lecture notes, and/or the readings to explain social construction. Your essay should describe (using examples from the show) how social construction occurs through small interactions and connect those interactions to their consequences. Your essay should be roughly 500 words (no more than 750), include a central thesis that answers the prompt and is defended by examples and quotes from the show. Grades are awarded based on clarity of argument, comprehension of course concepts, and depth of insight. See the following rubric:

Articulates a clear argument, including a thesis and examples from the show

/4

Clearly demonstrates understanding of course concept

/3

Provides unique insight/goes beyond surface explanations to analysis

Aka the “oh daaaaang” factor

/2

Submits a clean paper that covers all requirements (grammar, word count, etc.)

Friday’s Choose Your Own Adventure Assignments: Find an Example

In all of my lectures I try to use a lot of examples of course concepts, but my examples reflect who I am (a nerdy white American Christian woman in her 30s). Sometimes these examples resonate and other times they might feel out-of-touch. Moreover, one of the best ways to learn anything is to teach it! For this assignment you need to find or create an example similar to the ones I use in my lectures (a video clip, a picture, a meme, etc), and provide a short explanation of why you think it’s an example based on the criteria I provide.

The example content is not in and of itself worth extra credit. To receive extra credit, you must also be able to explain how your example demonstrates a course concept. This should be done in a paragraph or two.

Grading of the example is as follows:

10 points: creative and unique, this example is immediately clear and, without instructor modification, a useful learning tool for your classmates (and for future classes of 120 content)
If you provide a link to a video etc., I need to be able to open it and share it!
If it’s on a streaming platform, let me know which one and give me a sense of how difficult it is to access.
8 points: creative and unique, this example is clear but requires some instructor help explaining or relating to the course material
6 points: a creative or unique meme/video that mostly demonstrates course concepts, but has some flaws in thinking OR clearly demonstrates course concepts but isn’t unique or creative (might have been found through googling “social construction example” etc.)
5 points or lower: example’s connection to course concept fuzzy or, worse, misapplied or inaccurate. If you get this grade, you should come talk to me to make sure you understand the concept.
Put another format:

0-2

Accurate (does it really exemplify social construction?)

Detailed (Specific, and yet accessible)

Creative (unique and memorable)

Insightful (teaches us something about social construction)

Consequential (does it matter? Does this impact many someone’s lives?)

Total: ____/10
