When we look at a functionalist perspective on the roles that men and women play in a society, we can see that men have held the role of bringing home money and maintaining the physical side of the household. There was little expectation for men to have a role in the emotional side of the household. This is back when children were to be seen and not heard and it was the woman’s job to teach and take care of the kids as well as maintain the cleaning of the house. As there is no direct timing for when these roles came into being we can see that it was popularized with the nuclear family. In western culture, it has always been held as a strong patriarchal masculine society. Considering having a job and holding power is considered more masculine by our social norms, men have held that power as it seemed to go against social norms at the time if anything otherwise was done. As well we can see with most major religions this is even more reinforced. For many years it was seen as godly for men to work and hold power. It was looked down upon and even in some cases sacrilegious for women to hold power in households and society. When a social norm puts strong enfaces on one group having more power its bound to create inequality in a society. The patriarchal society held anywhere is inherently sexist causing women to have to do a tremendous amount of work to reach the same power a man has. This still holds true today, because in the functionalist perspective women have much less chance to find work, support themselves, and have an even more difficult time holding power in households, companies, and society. There has become a backlog of men holding power and women being pushed out of the conversation. Thankfully, we are now seeing change here in America but we have much more work till this can be changed.

Family is the foundation of society. The functionalist perspective sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. This approach looks at society through a macro-level orientation, which is a broad focus on the social structures that shape society as a whole and looks at both social structure and social functions. The influence of family affects on our life including the development of gender roles in ways they organize the environment for the child. This aims to address the impact of the nuclear family, on the formation of the concept of gender roles as well as gender discrimination. Males play instrumental roles and females play expressive roles as result of families provide initial socialization for children that shape their self-worth, attitudes, value, and behaviors. This attitude and behavior are learned in the family and later reinforced by the child’s peers, schools, and media. Children tend to observe and imitate the attitudes and behaviors of the same sex. Boys generally are encouraged to participate in more physical activities and are given more freedom to which explained how males have come to occupy the powerful, decision-making positions in American society. All children deserve to grow up and achieve their dreams – regardless of their gender. However, girls around the world are kept from attending school in favor of gender norms related to their role in household chores and the position of girls in society. Gender inequality in all socio-economic aspects of earnings, wages, ability, health, capital, and poverty broadened in several countries because women cannot have access and control over resources, gain from economic opportunities and determine their authority in the political field. To build a more equal, inclusive future, we need to start with family structure and childhood. Additionally, we need to hold policymakers accountable is critical to ensuring girls and boys experience a future that is full of opportunity. We’re must be taking action to ensure all children are treated fairly, including eliminating discriminatory policies, norms, and behaviors, such as preventing girls from accessing health services or denying education to a child because of gender norms.
