Week 4 discussion
1- Please go to the textbook for the course and read the section “Cherokee Women Oppose Removal”, pp. 282-86.
2- Consider the following questions:
What reasons did the Cherokee women present to support their position and justify their political participation?
What language did the Cherokee women employ to represent their sacred relationship with the land? What do you think they meant when they wrote that moving west would be “like destroying your mothers”?
What do the petitions suggest about Cherokee women and their place in society?
Lastly, I want you to reconsider the question I asked in the week 4 assignment. Do you consider the Cherokees who assimilated and adopted some components of “civilization” to be “sell-outs” in any way?
