Unit 6 responses

A Competing Value Framework (Hughes et al., 2022) axis presents the inherent tension between two opposite continuums of an organization’s preferred state of affairs. The axis represents the opposite of two extreme cultures representing the organization’s core values. The organization does not design or is consciously aware of its culture until an organizational change is warranted. The axis helps the organization transition into the desired culture.

The framework has four intersecting axes known as quadrants representing the competing values of an organization. Each quadrant listed below has a distinctive competing value depicting an organization’s culture; (Hughes et al., 2024)

Hierarchy Culture – a hierarchy culture is an organization with formalized rules and highly structured.

Market Culture – a market culture is an organization focused on the external environment. They concreate primarily on external interaction with their constituencies (customers, suppliers).

Clan Culture – A clan culture exists in organizations specializing in flexibility and discretion. It has a strong sense of cohesion and shared values.

Adhocracy Culture – Organizations strive for a high degree of discretion and flexibility and prioritize the outside environment.

Previous Employment:

Recently, my previous employment experienced a restructuring phase; and everything changed. We went from a Clan Culture to a Hierarchy. The office installed cameras, and the employees were watched daily.

  • Cameras with voice sensors installed.
  • Downsizing and half the work staff laid off.
  • Employees were terminated and in fear for their jobs.

Strength:

The greatest strength, as explained by Hughes et al. (2022), is that neither quadrant represents an organization’s ideal form of culture. Therefore, it would require a combination of two or more combined to achieve. (p. 310)

Weakness:

As Hughes et al. (2022) noted, the most significant weakness is that an organization must be capable of all quadrants to be effective
