Introduction
Trade statistics show that approximately 90% of the world trade is facilitated across the world’s oceans and seas for which more than ninety thousand water vessels carry trading products to and from sources to destinations (“Transportation (EBOPS 2002 code 205)”). So far water vessels run on fossil fuel thus emitting a significant amount of Carbon Dioxide in the air, and it is by no surprise that ship pollution occurs both on water and in the air. Studies have shown that ship pollution accounts for more than three percent of the Carbon Dioxide global emissions which is comparable to the primary carbon emitting countries (Jacques). On the other hand, a significant percentage of oil leakage has been attributed to ships, and the consequences on marine life have been detrimental. Through combined efforts to reduce global pollution by international bodies such as the International Marine Organization, and the United Nations Environment program, shipping pollution has been a controversial concern worth exploring in the succeeding sections presented herein.
