Understanding Hegemony

Question 1

According to Gramsci, hegemony results from the masses’ ascent to the rule of the dominant and elite community that enjoys power and confidence from their position and role in the production process (Gross, 2015). Consequently, the population spontaneously gives the few elite the power to determine the direction of their social life, which infers that hegemony is primarily given by those lowest in the social hierarchy, to those on top of the social strata. However, such consent is often a result of a multiplicity of factors as opposed to being willfully offered, which explains Gramsci’s definition of hegemony as spontaneous.
