The historian is Edward Snowden. Snowden was a spy gathering information from both sides of the world. He felt the deal made between countries would last until one side fold. Snowden got caught and was imprisoned for being a spy. Showing private details between countries, is punish by law and label as treason. The banality of evil was the way information was shared between countries. It was the payment received, the royal displayed and offered. It was also the way it made him feel empowered. The former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, agreed that Snowden “thinks his smarter and has a higher morality that the rest of us…that he can see clearer than other 299,999,999 of us, and therefore he can do what he wants. I say that is the worst form of treason (Ludlow, 2013).

After Snowden was caught, he wanted to talk but from the five rules in Moral Mazes was to remain silent. That was the bureaucracy that made him feel morally wrong. After the death Aaron Swartz the Moral Mazes provide an excellent job of explaining how well-intentioned people commit evil. As people in today’s society, it is necessary to break the ways to avoid evil. It can happen in our homes and workplace. There is no justice in breaking the law. The Bible tells us not to conform to this world. Be not overcome of evil but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). There is a responsibility to be held toward society. Paul reminds us that once we turn our lives over to Christ. We are freed from the control of sinful acts.

Within the course the course of performing legal duties, the goal is to have a positive ending. Unfortunately, a positive outcome is not always the end result. Good intentions can at times have negatives consequences. These negatives may not be obvious or clear due to the person being blinded by the goodness of their deed or duties. After September 11th, President Bush authorized American soldiers to Afghanistan with the goal of capturing Osama bin Laden and destroying any remaining al-Qaeda and Taliban forces. Although, the war on terror was legal and those acting within the parameters of their duties thousands of soldiers and innocent people were killed.

If I found myself in a bureaucratic position performing perfectly legal duties that had the potential to have an evil end, I would use good judgement and leaning on my Christian beliefs. James 1:5 laments, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him”. Therefore, I must put my effort into making the best choices I can make. Legal decision making and the outcomes are different due to the uncertainties surrounding the outcome. In the face of uncertainty we have to judge the quality of the decision at the time that it is being made, not after the outcome becomes known. I can only control the choices I make and hope for the best outcome in the end. The things we do every day take on greater significance because they are avenues through which we serve God and others.
