Film Review Rubric
The films review is worth 30% of your mark. You must choose 1 of 6 movies and review it against an IR
theory. (It is best to stick with 1 IR theory… yes, others may also be present in the film – choose the
theory that is most interesting/compelling for you).
You must:
1. Provide a summary of the movie (a paragraph or 2 max). Do not get into intimate, blow-by-blow detail. Use a summary that will help you match the film to your IR theory.
2. You must provide a summary of ONE of the IR theories you are exploring (a paragraph or 2
max).
3. Defend why your film and your theory match
a. Who are the main actors in the film? (Are they states, individuals, IOs?)
b. What are the main sources of power (hard and soft) for your main actors?
c. What tools do your main actors prefer? Why?
d. What IR logic does your film use (the logic of consequences or logic of appropriateness)?
4. What does this film say about I.R? Is it still “the relations between states” or do you need to
update this definition?
