Role of Citizens in Public Policy Process

Introduction

When laws and regulations are being made at the local, state, or national level, it is always important when the citizens are involved in such processes. Citizen participation refers to the process in which members of the public or private individuals have an opportunity to influence some of the major decisions and policies that are made by the legislature or certain arms of the government that makes laws for the society. In any democratic nation or political system, citizen participation is considered to be one of the major factors that determine the policymaking processes that are in place within the country or the jurisdiction. In the United States, citizen participation is highly encouraged by the American Constitution since these laws later affect the welfare and well-being of the people at the societal level. Citizen participation can be traced back to Ancient Greece and British Common Law which would later dictate the laws of the United States and how they are formulated.
