Abstract

To begin with, this study sought to cover the factors that contribute to the capacity of an emergency room measured by paients served in a day, and it established that emergency room capacity is in fact the number of beds in an emergency room. The number of beds therefore, is determined by several factors and among them includes the physician-to-bed ratio, where the number of hospital staff (i.e. nurses and doctors) is fixed. Therefore, the number of beds (capacity of emergency room) is determined by the number of staff that the hospital is able to allocate to the patients. Some hospitals even outsource labour whenever the number of cases exceeds the hospital’s capacity, say, cases from a greasy road accident nearby. Other factors include the economics aspect of the hospital based on the model, supplier-induced demand – an empty bed is a filled bed, this is the profit motive side of the hospital’s management.

The second task covered in this study is a discussion of the steps taken in designing a process layout: these steps are three and the first involves collecting information to aid in the design, for instance, space requirements of various departments.
