In this assignment, you will identify a topic of personal political interest and develop an argument designed to persuade someone towards your chosen position on that issue.
Do not leave lines in-between paragraphs, and indent new paragraphs. Your works cited page will not count towards your page length, nor will any figures you choose to use. If your paper is any less than 8 pages in length, it will be considered inadequate and penalized significantly. “8 pages” means 8 full pages of writing, top to bottom. Papers that are greater than 10 pages in length will be given significantly more leeway, but you should not extend your paper to the bottom of the 11th page or beyond. DO NOT include any “header” information at the top of your paper, such as name, date, class name/number, professor name, etc. This will be regarded as wasting space and will not count towards your page length. Do not include a title page. You should provide your paper with a title, which should be centered at the top of your paper in bold, 12-pt font. I will try to find weaknesses in your work at each point in the process – not to be picky or difficult, but to help you grow as a writer. Which parts of your argument are weak? Which of your citations are questionable in terms of accuracy or characterization? Do you use a tone that will be off-putting to your audience? I will try to help you identify ways to improve your ability to think through and defend your argument. I will not tolerate an essay that can reasonably be construed to argue against the basic rights or dignity of any identity group based on their immutable characteristics. I have no interest in shutting down the free exchange of ideas, but if you think you are crossing the lines of appropriateness, you probably are. You are strongly encouraged to read the Writing Guide for a variety of helpful tips for improving your paper. You are also encouraged to use me as a resource throughout the semester. Plagiarism on this assignment will be taken extremely seriously. Any plagiarism detected at any step in this process will result in your receiving a zero on the entire assignment, and possibly facing greater disciplinary action.
