1. Also, some believe that being task-oriented and relying on consultation can be a good leadership tactic that often results in good outcomes. As you know, this tactic of consultation will keep folks interested and involved. In my old department, we have a major challenge with providing safe schools after the increase in school shootings that have occurred in our state and around the country. Everyone is involved in this process from the state levels to local municipalities. Funding has been allocated to support the program, but as one can be suspect, the funding is inadequate to promote a program that will meet the desired standards. Although I am not a Police Officer, the input of civilians is required to make the program a success. One of the limitations that I have found with consultation is that oftentimes the agendas and objectives of the two groups or even some staff members are competing or are in conflict. For instance, the local school boards are attempting to negotiate for some services that are not funded and would cause an additional burden to local Police Departments. With that being said, what are some ways to mitigate these limitations?

2. CEO of General Motors; she is the first female to hold this position and is a recognized leader. Before taking this position she worked within the company in an electrical engineer position and worked her way up the ladder. She has held many roles within General Motors, and her hard work paid off in 2014 when she was selected to become the next CEO. Mrs. Barra was with the company when they went through a great recession and the automotive company was crashing. She was instrumental in downsizing the labor forces while dealing with the unions and helping to allocate funds to use in specific departments to rebound after the recession. She is a hands on leader, by working within the company in several positions it has allowed her to establish work relationships that remain today. Mrs. Barra is an excellent communicator, able to reach both stakeholders and employees. One of her main focuses was to put the customers first and establish community relationships as well. The ability to facilitate the vision and mission of the company has earned her the respect of her peers. I enjoyed reading about how she was able to become an effective leader by listening to the concerns of employee unions and establishing benchmarks so that the company could rebound and grow.

During the recession, there was a lot of uncertainty, most organizations didn’t make it and many thought that the automobile company was doomed. Many auto companies were able to obtain federal funds to remain afloat until business picked up again. They were able to set up early retirements and package bonuses that benefited the company and stakeholders. By utilizing her knowledge from wearing many hats within the organization, she has promoted continued growth and stability within the company.

3. As an avid coffee and Starbucks lover, the first leader to come to my mind was the CEO of Starbucks, Kevin R. Johnson. In 2018 two black men were sitting in Starbucks when they were racially profiled and walked out of the coffee shop in handcuffs for simply being black. This was caught on video and many people were and should have been outraged at the blatant racial profiling. This led to many people calling for boycotts of Starbucks and firing of staff, among other things. However, when faced with this Kevin R. Johnson did what any successful leader should do, he apologized. He didn’t just say “I’m sorry” and leave it at that. He was authentic in his apology, he apologized on multiple occasions and took personal responsibility for the situation, rather than throwing the manager and staff from the Philadelphia Starbucks location under the bus, so to speak. Though it didn’t stop there. Within a week of the incident more than 8,000 locations closed and 175,000 employees received racial bias training to help ensure this wouldn’t happen again. I think Kevin R. Johnson is a great example of using situational leadership after a crisis to help his company recover from a potentially business-killing incident. “This approach provides a model that suggests to leaders how they should behave based on the demands of a particular situation” (Northouse, 2021). This style of apology hadn’t been done before, or should I say, hadn’t been done as successfully before. Kevin R. Johnson was able to take appropriate action, quickly, and had the opportunity to implement changes in how the Starbucks locations throughout the world operated. This is a great example of effective leadership because many people have forgotten this incident has even happened, and while it is never a good thing to forget there is bias in many forms, with the race being one we still deal with today, but for a company to recover so completely from that in a day and age with social media is an amazing feat.
