Comparing treatment of Vietnam War Veterans and World War II veterans

About this Assignment

The United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War drastically changed the public’s opinion on the effect war has on soldiers. It has also affected the nation’s policy toward war and is still used as an example against involvement in foreign wars today. With this in mind, please write a 2000 word essay based on one of the two prompts below.

Prompt

  1. Compare and contrast the treatment of Vietnam War veterans with World War II veterans in the U.S. How did the government treat both types of veterans? What type of assistance was offered to them when they returned? How did the public respond to them? Why do you think there was such a difference in how the Vietnam veterans were treated, and how has this informed how veterans of more recent conflicts have been regarded?

Introduction

World War II and the Vietnam War were wars, which the U.S. joined. The Vietnam war got fought in the year 1959 to the year 1975, and the main reason America entered into the war was to help stop the spread of communism.  The main reason that led World War II was the invasion of Poland by Germany. The war began in the year 1939 and ended around 1945. The state of America came in to join the fight when Germany attacked Pearl Harbor. The American public greatly supported the idea of World War II. The Vietnam war did not receive a lot of support because most people weren’t convinced it was necessary to join the fight. After returning home from battle soldiers in the Vietnam war did not feel any pride, unlike the others who felt pride in their service.
