Week 4 Assignment

We Shall Remain – Trail of Tears Assignment

Introduction

The video for this assignment is part of a series We Shall Remain. In my opinion, it is the best documentary on the history of Native Americans in this country.
This particular episode deals with the Cherokee Indians, who lived in the Southeast (Georgia and North Carolina) during the 1830s. The story of the Cherokees forces us to consider whether American democracy had room for people of different races as well as religions and classes. The Cherokees had made a number of choices in dealing with the United States. Many chose to assimilate to American culture in an attempt to keep their lands and their Cherokee government.
This video tells the story of the Cherokees in the 1820s and 1830s as they battled with the administration of Andrew Jackson. The great Cherokee actor, Wes Studi, stars in the documentary. You can read more about him on his Wikipedia page. He does indeed speak the Cherokee language.
