You can also use our course textbook, “The Beginnings of Western Science” by David C. Lindberg (2nd edition) please make sure to provide citations as appropriate.

Remember to begin your essay with a well-formulated thesis. Then use material from the course to demonstrate your argument. It is important to indicate the significance of the evidence you present. In other words, don’t just list facts, tell me what they mean.

1. The development of Ancient Greece was deeply impacted by geography. Demonstrate this impact on the developments in the natural sciences, arts and humanities, and social sciences from the Archaic to the Hellenistic Age. Make sure to provide specific examples of ideas, developments, artworks, etc.

2. Plato’s greatest student, Aristotle, disagreed with his teacher in fundamental ways. How did Plato’s teachings on the fundamental nature of reality, the universe, society, and art differ from those of his pupil Aristotle? What did they have in common? How do they typify the cultural achievement of the Ancient Greeks?
