What are some of the current threats to Indian reservations?

Week 9 Assignment

HOMELAND: FOUR PORTRAITS OF NATIVE ACTION

Introduction

This is one of my favorite documentaries. It was made in 2005. I have the DVD, but I have been unable to get to my work office and make the DVD into a video for you, my beloved online class, to watch. I have struggled all day to digitize this DVD from home and the best I could do was get the first 45 minutes and the last 15mins. There is a 30-min gap. I hope to fix this by the end of the week.
Anyway, I like the documentary because it provides many insights. First, the documentary shows us how Native people live today. They are both very far away from their ancestors in terms of how they live (trucks, boats, etc.) and very close to the way their ancestors lived. Second, these Native people again show us the power of resistance and survival. I mean, as we live through this corona-virus crisis, resistance and survival seem important to say the least. Lastly, what are the lessons these people can teach us about our society?

**Warning: Around minutes 39-41, there is caribou hunting. Please be aware of that and skip it if you might feel uncomfortable. **

Questions

1—What are some of the current threats to Indian reservations? Please explain. What is your opinion, should our society continue to press Native Americans for access to their natural resources? (Minute 2-7)

2—Describe the Coal Wars between the Northern Cheyenne (a few sentences will do). What was interesting to you? Why do you think that the Northern Cheyenne have not tried to develop their resources further? (min. 12-23, especially min. 23)

3—According to the promotional federal government video, how much money would Alaska Natives receive as part of their agreement to allow oil drilling? Why do you think the Gwich’inpeoples resisted? Given the Exxon Valdez spill, do you think they were right to resist? (min. 28-33)

4—Why do the Gwich’in hunt the caribou? (min. 41)

5—If our American society is a consumer culture and we consume more resources than we have, then must we impose on other people and try to take them from them? (min. 44-45) There are lots of good points made at the end of this part of the video. I’m curious to hear your opinion.

6 — What can we learn from Native peoples? You will be able to use some of this on your final exam.
