Gilded Age Politics and Progressivism

1/ Consider the political problems facing the country in the late 19th century. Do you see any parallels between the political situation then and what we face in the United States today?

2/ How were the Populists similar or different from the Progressives in terms of their goals? The types of problems they were trying to fix?

3/ What were the key ways in which Progressive reformers tried to change the role of government in American society? Were these efforts necessary, or misguided? To what extent did they succeed in fulfilling their goals?

Part One: Question Two

The primary difference between progressives and populism lay in the issues they hoped to address in the respective communities. In particular, the populist movement existed in the nineteenth century, and primarily included efforts by farmers to address economic issues that had long disadvantaged them from accessing ideal prices in the market. Lack of government control in the economy at the time had left them at the mercy of the companies to which they sold their produce, effectively leading to significant exploitation.
