Social media platforms can have many positive implications such as, ease of communication, entertainment, and help with business growth, but there are many dangers to be aware of, especially when it comes to our youth. “The teen mental health crisis has shaken school districts across the country, prompting many to wage legal battles against the social media giants they say have helped cause it” (D’Souza, K., 2023). According to Erickson’s industry vs. inferiority stage of development, adolescence “begin to describe themselves in terms of psychological traits, compare their own characteristics with those of their peers, and speculate about the causes of their strengths and weaknesses. These transformations in self-understanding have a major impact on self-esteem.” (Berk, L., 2023). There has been a mental health crisis among our youth since the development of social media according to articles written in 2023 by D’souza and Schlott, the increased social medica presence is effecting students’ self-esteem and the industry vs. inferiority stage of development.
