Scenario:

You have a new client, Maria, who is seeking therapy to help her adjust to a new position in her corporate job. This is the first time she has ever been in a management position, but she now oversees 15 employees, all male. She doesn’t feel that they listen to her and respect her, particularly Marty, who had also applied for her management position. She doesn’t feel accepted by them, instead feeling like an outsider with no real power. Sometimes it feels as if they are talking about her behind her back, because they are whispering when she walks into the room. It really seems to be affecting her self-esteem and her ability to manage the department. How do you conceptualize her concerns from the perspective of feminist theory? What methods (if any) would you use in working with her? If no specific methods are used, what would your goals include?

Feminism, a Case Study

            The essence of feminist theory entails a belief in human equality through equalizing various paradigms with regard to sexuality, gender, patriarchy, and power (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan 2015, p.339). Based on this, Maria’s concerns can be conceptualized under the principle of sex and gender. It is evident that, in this scenario, the male employees perceive Maria as a deviant while they are normative. For this reason, they feel that they cannot be managed by a female. It is the reason why Maria feels that she is not respected nor listened.
