Evidence-Based Practice

How would you react if your primary care physician said to you, “I just heard about an interesting new drug that I want to prescribe for you. The pharmaceutical representative told me that it was a really effective medication, but I really have not had the chance to review the research”? As an educated person, you might be a little hesitant to accept the prescription. Unfortunately, there might be some individuals who would take the prescription simply because the doctor prescribed it.

This type of power differential also exists in counseling relationships. Clients will often follow the recommendations of a counselor based on the belief that the recommendations offered are sound. Thus, counselors must understand the research related to counseling and clearly differentiate between those techniques and interventions that are supported by empirical evidence and those that have limited support.

For this Application Assignment, you locate two current, peer-reviewed articles from PsychInfo or a similar counseling-related database. Conduct a Boolean search on a counseling research topic of interest, such as anxiety disorder, and major depression.

Assignment (2–3 pages):

Explain how the literature search was conducted, including terms used to search, what counseling databases were used, and how the search was broadened or narrowed.
Identify the research designs used in each article selected and note how the design was identified.
Explain how each of the selected research designs informs counseling practice (be sure to focus on how the research was done and not what was studied).
Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are required to provide a reference list and to appropriately cite, in APA style, all references used within your assignment.
