In the criminal justice system of the United States, there are many agencies that have been developed to address some of the issues within the system. There are three major categories including law enforcement agencies, the courts and prosecution agencies, and the agencies that are meant to supervise offenders such as probation agencies. The area of interest in the criminal justice system that I identified is substance abuse among prisoners within the prisons and correctional facilities within the country. Substance abuse in prisons across the United States is not new and is one thing that reduces the effectiveness of the correctional facilities within the country. The agency that I selected for this essay is the Alabama Department of Corrections.
