When grants are being issued to nonprofit companies and institutions, there are two major categories including competitive versus noncompetitive grants. Competitive grants are where different nonprofit organizations have to submit plans on the manner in which they intend to use the funds from the grant towards a given purpose. An independent review committee is setup to review the various applications that have been submitted that are interested in the grant. Independence of the committee is of great importance since it ensures that the grants will be used in the best possible way to address a given societal issue. Such an assessment also aims at ascertaining the ability of the company to address the issue that a certain population faces.
