Note: Feel free to create a Sketchboard (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.(instead of a written CRR) in response to the CRR questions. You can then use Screencastify to narrate how the images/symbols and connections you make answer the questions below. Then, you can submit the link to your screencast through this assignment page.

Questions to Answer:

  1. What is the white racial frame and how does it operate?
  2. What is a “field of racial positions” and “racial triangulation”? And how does Kim argue that Asian Americans have been “racially triangulated” within this “field of racial positions”?
  3. What is “differential racialization” and the factors that are part of the processes by which it happens?
  4. What are “racial hierarchies” and the process by which they are created?

Pick Three to Answer:

  1. What is the relationship of Feagin’s theory of the “white racial frame,” and Kim’s notion of “discourse” as a process that generates a “field of racial positions”?
  2. What does Kim argue are the key processes by which Asian Americans experience “racial triangulation”?
  3. What are the relationships between the white racial frame and the model minority myth?
  4. How does Pulido argue that the process of racialization is one that is distinctive and specific?
  5. How does going beyond the Black/White binary relate to powell’s statements regarding our need to move past “disparities” into deeper understandings of “structural marginalization”?
  6. Pulido argues that there is a dialectic that occurs between processes of class formation and racial ideologies. What examples does she use to support this claim?

Racial Issues

Part 1

The white racial frame is the continuous perception of white supremacy and hegemony of other races by the dominant whites. Since the arrival of white Europeans into the Americas, they have always dominated other races, primarily based on their access to resources (Feagin 1). Consequently, the perception of white superiority by other races has led them to seek association through assimilation, in which the white race often lifts its standards relative to others. Ultimately, the white frame is no different from a standard of the perception of races.
